Questions
The things people actually ask us.
Everything a first-timer asks on WhatsApp before booking, answered here instead — including the ones with awkward answers.
Before you book
Will I actually fly on my first session?
Most people do, usually somewhere in the second half of the lesson. First flights are a few seconds long — that is what a first flight is. By the end of ninety minutes most riders are linking runs of ten or twenty seconds. We are not going to promise you a hundred percent, because nobody honest can.
Do I need to be able to surf?
No, and surfing does not help as much as people expect. Balance from snowboarding, wakeboarding or skating helps a little. Being relaxed in water helps most.
How fit do I need to be?
Not very. You are not paddling and you are not fighting anything. You need enough core strength to get from your knees to your feet, and enough energy to climb back on the board a few times.
Can I swim badly?
You need to be genuinely comfortable in deep water wearing a buoyancy vest. You do not need to be a strong swimmer, because the vest floats you and the board is right there. If you are nervous in open water, tell us before you book and we will be honest about whether it is for you.
Is there a weight limit?
The boards are rated to 130 kg.
What age?
Twelve and up. Under 18s need a parent or guardian present to sign the waiver. There is no upper limit and our older riders tend to listen better.
Money and dates
Why is it more expensive than a jet ski?
A jet ski hire is a machine and a deposit. This is ninety minutes of one instructor's undivided attention, all the kit, and an edited film of it afterwards. We also only have two boards, so we run two sessions a day — one morning, one afternoon. We would rather do two properly than twenty badly.
Do I pay a deposit?
No. Nothing is taken online. You pay on the day, once you have been in the water.
What if it's windy?
We tell you, and suggest the other water, a calmer time or another day — you choose. If none of that works you pay nothing, because we never held your money in the first place. The full policy is on the safety page.
Can I book for tomorrow?
Sometimes. In July and August we are often full a week ahead; in May or October tomorrow is usually fine. Message us and you will get a real answer quickly.
Can you do a gift?
Yes, and they work well — a voucher is valid twelve months, which covers a whole season. Tell us the name and we will send you something you can actually hand over.
On the day
How much of the ninety minutes is on the water?
Most of it. About fifteen minutes goes on a genuine briefing on land and getting kitted; the rest is on the water. A charged battery outlasts the session, so it is never the battery that ends it — and we never run one flat.
Where do we meet?
You choose: the sea at Praia da Falésia, between Vilamoura and Albufeira, or Barragem do Arade near Silves. We send the exact meeting point when we confirm your session, and if the wind is wrong for your pick that day, we tell you and suggest the other. Both are well under an hour from most of the central Algarve.
Does it hurt when you fall?
Falling into flat water from a standing height is nothing. The board has a guard over the propeller for every lesson and you will be wearing an impact vest and a helmet. Bruises happen; anything worse is rare and we work hard to keep it that way.
Can my family watch?
Yes, and they should — they will end up in the film. From most of our spots they can watch from a pontoon or a bank a few metres away.
When do I get the video?
Within two days, straight to WhatsApp. Drone footage is not included: it costs extra, and depends on our pilot being free that day — ask for it when you book.
Something we haven't covered?
Ask us directly. You will get an answer from the person who would be teaching you, not from a call centre.
